It came as President Biden was warned by one of the architects of the Northern Ireland peace agreement that unionist discontent over the Brexit settlement “risks a return to sectarian strife”. Lord Trimble, the former first minister and former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, has written to the US president expressing concern at his support for the Brexit mechanism that keeps Northern Ireland in the EU’s single market.
Biden has been clear to both Boris Johnson and unionists that his administration sees the Northern Ireland protocol as critical in maintaining the integrity of the Good Friday agreement and will not support its dismantling.
