It is not difficult to see UK-EU relations going badly wrong in the coming years. Each side will take pleasure in attributing its own successes and the other’s failures to Brexit and its aftermath. Scots will be told their choice is between two unions. A new faultline has already emerged in Northern Ireland. Ambitious British politicians will seek advancement by condemning Brussels. Insults will fly across the Channel and the Irish land border; Washington will grimace, Moscow and Beijing will smile.
